We are excited to propose the establishment of a remarkable Eritrean St. Mary Debre Sina Tesfa Sdudan Oriental Orthodox Tewahdo Monastery in the United States. This radiant sanctuary will uphold the authentic faith of the Oriental Orthodox tradition, grounded in the divine mystery of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—fully God and fully man in One United Nature, as articulated in the doctrine of Miaphysitism. The monastery will function as a beacon of divine light, fostering deep connections through heartfelt devotion, offering daily liturgical services, and vibrant worship. It aims to create a wellspring of divine mercy and grace, serving as a sacred source of sanctified water that provides healing, cleansing, and a pathway to deeper spiritual renewal.

Our mission is to uphold and celebrate our “Holy Tradition,” which embodies the timeless teachings of the Oriental Orthodox Faith, its Canon, and the profound doctrine of “Miaphysitism,” reflecting the unified nature of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We strive to nurture a faith that fosters an inspiring environment for spiritual growth, where sacred liturgical practices and the wisdom of the apostolic church fathers inform every aspect of community life. We aim to unite communities by building spiritual connections with all Oriental Orthodox Tewahdo (O.O.T) churches and believers, both within the USA and abroad. Our goal is to expand the preaching of the Gospel globally, reaching the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia, and beyond, as Christ commanded in Matthew 28:19: “Go and preach, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Additionally, we are committed to providing humanitarian services worldwide, engaging in acts of kindness, serving youth, supporting orphans, and offering parental guidance—all while reflecting the compassion and love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We aim to provide countless NGO services to developing countries. Tesfa Sdudan Kidist Dengel Mariam DebreSina is a vision born out of prayer, sacrifice, and deep devotion. Rooted in the ancient and sacred traditions of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, this monastery is inspired by both faith and history — linking the spiritual legacy of the past to the faithful of today.
The Anseba Region of Eritrea is home to some of the most revered historical and religious sites in the country, among them the renowned Monastery of Debre Sina. Situated in the Eritrean highlands, about 18 kilometers east of the town of Elabered along the Asmara-Keren road, this monastery has long been a pilgrimage site for Eritrean Orthodox Christians, especially in the month of June.
According to sacred tradition and local legend, this site holds profound significance. It is believed that St. Mary and her young Son, Jesus, accompanied by Joseph and Salome, once took refuge there while fleeing persecution by King Herod of Judea. After their stay in Egypt at the Monastery of Koskuam, the Holy Family continued southward and arrived at the caves of Debre Senhit (later known as Debre Sina), where they are said to have stayed for forty days.
This place, sanctified by their presence, is believed to have received a divine blessing. According to the legend, God placed His holy hand on a great rock at the site, creating a sacred cave with two miraculous entrances — one facing east and the other west. Today, this very cave remains a site of awe and veneration.
Tesfa Sedudan DebreSina Monastery in North America draws spiritual and symbolic inspiration from this holy place, serving as a modern continuation of that sacred legacy. Our mission is to establish a lasting spiritual home for the faithful in the Western world — a refuge for prayer, pilgrimage, and connection to our ancient faith.

The exact location is currently under careful consideration. We are working prayerfully and strategically to secure land in a region accessible to the Eritrean Orthodox communities across the United States and Canada.

The future site of Tesfa Sdudan Kidist Dengel Mariam DebreSina Monastery is expected to cover 15–298 acres, allowing for a chapel, retreat housing, gardens, and spaces for community worship, reflection, and monastic life.

💰 How much has been budgeted for this project?

The initial project budget is approximately $3–7 million USD, covering land acquisition, development, construction, and early operating costs. With God’s help and your partnership, we will bring this vision to life.
